Is Your Blog Traffic Going to Last Forever? No!

326 Flares 326 Flares ×
change blogging attitude

Change is good. I'd keep it...

Is your blog traffic going to last forever? You think so?

Yes, it is important to build your traffic, build your blog.

But, more important is the fact that you have to keep on doing it: you have to maintain your traffic, you have to keep the visitors coming.

In this blog post, we are going to talk about Traffic Maintenance, rather than Traffic Generation – you have to have some change occasionally, right? Let’s have that change right now, right here.

Psst, I know that I can’t be the top blogger, forever!

Attitude

I'm better....

Before I move on further, let me clarify what I mean by “forever”.

Forever means blogging for 1 or more years.

To maintain your blogging popularity, you need to not just start a blog, but continue to blog. Why blog?

Just keep on doing it, customizing your web design, inviting guest bloggers, do what bloggers do, learn new things, share them and so on.

In this blog post, we will also talk about attitude, changing strategies and changing our styles. We will also talk about the various impacts of these changes on your blog and on the amount of traffic we receive, daily.

Now, I know. I need to realize and accept it.

Yes, you need to realize that you can’t be the top blogger forever. You also need to accept it.

Yes, it is true that with hard work and all other things, you can be the top blogger for sometime, but you can’t maintain it for a long time.

In fact, no one can do it. We all know that there is someone better than us (at every single task).

The same rule applies to blogging. There is someone better than you are. Even if that someone doesn’t have that much traffic.

Note : I also want to tell you not to view blogs with traffic stats in mind. Yes, we all do it. Every day. We read blogs, we check their stats. It is a bad habit to do so. Yes, stats can provide a good data on how well the author is blogging. But, that doesn’t mean anything. It doesn’t mean that the blogger with the least traffic doesn’t have good content. Maybe the blogger just sucks at marketing. So, don’t ever judge a blog by looking at its traffic (alone).

Do you have a positive outlook for the future ?

Do you have an optimistic attitude?

Optimistic attitude refers to “having a positive outlook for the future“.

Optimism will give you more energy and get you pumped up for more work. Optimism will help you to overcome your failures, learn from your mistakes and face the criticisms and move on.

Having a positive attitude will also help you to blog better, come up with fresh ideas, write in a better fashion, promote using unique strategies and market your blog in unique ways.

I will tell you that Attitude has always been our king.

Content is not the KING ! Having excellent content is important, but having a good attitude is more important.

To Blog, Get Traffic and Maintain it, You need to have an optimistic attitude.

Optimistic Attitude, by my definitions, also includes 7 different blogging elements. They are:

  1. Determination to work hard,
  2. Passion to keep you blogging,
  3. Patience to work until you achieve your goal,
  4. Motivation to point out why you blog,
  5. Confidence that you can do it,
  6. Effective Time Investment to do your work and
  7. Dedication to your task.

(these are the basic one, but you may have seen me talking about others that also play an important role).

Your Attitude

Its how you look at it....

Along with all this comes, Change.

You also need to improve/change your attitude every now and then.

Attitude also refers to having a good personality and the ability to add that personality to your posts. Even slight improvement in your attitude can bring great change (I know this from experience).

Having a good attitude, also refers to some good traits like Honesty, Commitment, Courtesy, Responsibility etc.

All of us have an attitude. All of us have these elements in our personality.

But, we use it differently. We apply it differently at different situation.

The solution to our Attitude problem is not about learning something new, rather it is more about applying what we learned (behaviors) or what we already know (like instinct behaviors).

All of these things are interconnected. If you mess up something, you are going to mess up something else too. It is a domino effect.

Having a good attitude can help you greatly with maintaining your position in the blogosphere. It will help you greatly to earn good reputation and maintain constant traffic to your blog, even if you are not posting anything.

Now, I would like to end there (about our discussion of Attitude).

Let’s talk about Change and how it plays a role.

Change Your Blogging Style

What about your blogging style?

Change also applies to your style of blogging, how you write, how you divide your content into paragraphs or even where you choose to use headlines.

All of this has an effect on your long term traffic.

You may think that they have negligible effect. Yes, they do, when you compare them individually.

But these things have an affection towards each others ; meaning that they always stick together. And, they make a Synergistic Impact.

The definition of Synergism is: The effect of sum of two or more elements are greater than the effect of the elements, individually (Yes, it is a chemical word, but it is still applicable  here).

To maintain your blogging popularity, you need to change your blogging style, occasionally.

You may customize your way of writing, change how and where you insert headlines, change the way you add your personality to the post, change up your blog design, customize it, reward your readers through new features, provide incentives – the list goes on.

I always liked a change (that’s the reason why I used to change my blogger template – when I was using Google’s Blogger – every now and then).

That’s all I have to Say!

Attitude Plays an important role – focus on your attitude, not on your blog.

Change is also important. Change your styles a bit, find new strategies, apply them, share and JUST BLOG!

That’s about everything that I planned to write for this post.

Now it is your turn. Just share, comment or do something to promote this post if you liked it :) I would greatly appreciate it.

Do you have anything to add? Don’t you think that maintaining your blogging popularity is important ? Do you agree with me ? Do you have any thing else to say?

All comments, suggestions and criticism are welcome.

Psst: If you think that this post is old and didn’t help at all, just let me know (if you are willing to). I would greatly appreciate your honest opinion. Thank you!

Very thoughtful points. Appreciate your talented researches and guidance as don’t go after traffic and concentrate on topics. Let the creations be for pleasure and not to maintain traffic.

I look forward to reading more posts by you.

A Blog to Remember

Mom Blog May 17, 2011 at 5:30 am

Ana,
I love your site and frequent here when I need a little help. I now have an e-commerce site that I have linked to my mom blog that sells Scentsy products. I have had a few orders, but not what I would like to generate. How do you recommend I add SEO to the Scentsy Site so that others can find it, there are TONS of Scentsy Rep’s online. How do I make my site stand out above the rest?
My mom blog received low daily traffic, but I have a passion for it and look forwards to working on it. I have affiliate offers, but rarely do they generate leads. Can you give me a little “push” on this one?

Ana May 18, 2011 at 8:50 am

I DEFINITELY think employing even some SEO principles will help your Sentsy site, despite the visible competition.

You know why?

Because most sentsy reps have no idea how to make SEO work for them, and most of them probably end up on the first page of Google out of sheer luck and because there’s not much SEO competition.

So if you start doing SEO, you can definitely get all the way to the top – no question in my mind.

Hey James,

I am glad that you like my post, Thank you ! And thank you for the great quote. Yes, attitude is important. It plays a far more important role than anything else on your life.

Btw James, even though you aksed it to Ana, I am giving you the answer : You have to search for G.A.S.P instead of the full name. You can use google or WP plugin directory to find it.

Jeevanjacobjohn May 12, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Blog commenting. That must have been great (and tiring). So, what are your main sources of traffic now ?

You compared it with a great example. Anyway, thank you for your input !

Jeevanjacobjohn May 12, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Hey Riya,

I am glad that you agree with my post. Yes, attitude is really important to a person (it matters the most). If you have great content and bad attitude, well then, your blog is not going to establish itself as a popular one.

Anyway, thank you for your comment. Btw, what are your major traffic sources ? What strategies do you use to drive traffic ?

Brad Harmon May 11, 2011 at 7:33 pm

I’m always amazed at the wisdom you’ve grasped so young, Jeevan. I like your point that attitude is king. You’re right. We’ll always make mistakes, but how we respond to these situations make a world of difference. No, we’ll never reach a place where we can rest on our laurels when it comes to our blogs. It requires a constant state of learning, experimenting, and consistency through all the changes. Having a great attitude during all of this helps keep us on top.

Jeevanjacobjohn May 12, 2011 at 7:31 pm

Thanks, Brad !

You summed it up right. Attitude is the King. And it will continue to play a major role on the life of humans. Thank you for the comment, Brad ! Btw, what are your traffic generation strategies ? Your traffic sources ?

James Bennett May 11, 2011 at 2:27 pm

Great post!

I like your thought process and I heard it said once-

Attitude determines your Altitude much more than your Aptitude.

Being different and talking about different things can attract new visitors as well… That’s what’s great about guest posts.

(BTW… Ana- I need some help…. the Anti-spam plugin that you have in your blog comments to check mark you’re not a spammer… I can’t find it and would like to have it on my blogs… can you point me in the right direction?)
Regards,
-James

Quite useful points you have focused here. Yes i didn’t update my blog from a long time but i have learned lots of new things from this mistake and those mistakes won’t be done again. Thanks

Jeevanjacobjohn May 12, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Hey Rakesh,

Thanks ! I am glad that it helped me. Yes, mistakes can be considered “bad”, but they are useful. They will help you to succeed. Anyway, thank you for the comment ! Btw, what happened ? Why didn’t update ? Did your traffic decrease, entirely ?

Riya May 11, 2011 at 3:58 am

Hi Jeevan,

Very interesting post about blogging and of course our attitude. I totally agreed with you that we actually learn lot of things but we hardly implement it on our site or blog. That’s what makes big difference. This is clearly the reason of attitude. If we’ve optimistic attitude like you already said then these things won’t happen.

Jeevanjacobjohn May 12, 2011 at 6:53 pm

Hey Riya,

Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it. Attitude is really important to a person. It determines who you are and what you will be. If you have great content and a bad attitude, then you are going to be a popular blogger for a long time.

Btw, what strategies do you use to drive traffic ? What are your main traffic sources ?

Mavis Nong May 11, 2011 at 3:03 am

Hi Jeevan,

WOW! I’m blown by your words of wisdom. You’re sharing solid advice here. A blog/website is a work in progress really. It’s important to make changes as you go along and maintain your standards and good quality.

Change is good and it has to be embraced with positive attitude.

Congratulations on your first guest post here and thanks for sharing your insights, Jeevan.

All the best,
Mavis

Jeevanjacobjohn May 11, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Hey Mavis,

Thank you ! I appreciate your compliments !

Glad that you agree with me. Change is really important for blogging. Every now and then, each post goes out dated. Because, there are more posts coming out, each second.

Thanks. I hope that I could write more here !

By the way, what are your traffic sources ?

Shadab May 10, 2011 at 8:30 pm

Hi Jeevan,
Firstly nice to meet you here. This is Shadab from India and I have started Blogging around from 6 months ago. You share a nice article. it helps to all new bloggers. I am in trouble because some blogs which launched in the date just near mine launching date. now they have around 300 to 400 posts but I could completed only 40 posts. So If I talk about me then it is not possible for me to create 400 posts in 6 months. because the major time spends to research the keywords and arrange in title, h1, h2,… p, meta’s and then write content and morning and evening comes to door and go out every day lol! I can’t stop it. How people do it with the smarter ways. they are very smart. Can you share me some tips about that.

Jeevanjacobjohn May 11, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Hey Shadab,

Don’t worry about it. It is not the quantity that matters. What matters is that you have a unique approach to blogging. And Never Fear. Face your challenges. Write excellent posts. Think of good ideas. Use marketing techniques to build up your blog. I suggest your to visit Blogengage and read the articles that you can find (you can also promote your posts at blogengage.com).

Thank you for your comment !

By the way, let me know if you have any questions. I will be glad to help you.

Shadab May 11, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Hey Jeevan,
Thanks for your reply and your advice I am really appreciated and about blogengage I already find you through blogengage and I am also using posts promotion that is nice and got some traffic from there.
Hope if you like blogengage then you would also like indiblogger. Here you can also promote your posts via indivine section.

Best Regards!
Mohammad Shadab

Jeevanjacobjohn May 12, 2011 at 6:31 pm

No problem. Oh, I had already joined indiblogger last year (sadly, I was never active there). Anyway, thank you for your reply and mention of Indiblogger.

Justin Germino May 10, 2011 at 3:12 pm

Agree with all your tips and points Jeevan, it is true that what is popular today may not be of interest a year from now and even the site itself or blogging has we know it may be vastly different 5 years from now.

Jack Foley May 11, 2011 at 2:17 am

Yea a blog as any website should always work in progress,

as u say the blog with the most useful up to date content will always attract the massess

Jeevanjacobjohn May 11, 2011 at 2:31 pm

Yes, I agree Jack. We must be consistent with our blog.

By the way, what sites do you use for marketing ? (traffic generation)

Jeevanjacobjohn May 11, 2011 at 2:28 pm

@Justin

Thank you for agreeing, Justin !

I think the article will be outdated sooner, like 1 year or so. Thank you for the comment !

By the way, what are your traffic sources, Justin ?

Justin Germino May 11, 2011 at 3:10 pm

I gave you access to my Google Analytics, you can see for yourself.

Majority of my traffic 60% comes from search engines, most of that Google. about 25% comes from referring sites my top being Mgid, StumbleUpon, Twitter, BlogEngage and Facebook (in that order of highest to lowest monthly). I get about 15% direct site traffic.

As of now, I had 45,600 unique visits / 58,953 pageviews in the last 30 days to dragonblogger.com

Jeevanjacobjohn May 11, 2011 at 4:12 pm

Yes, I did see your traffic stats. It is amazing that your site simply get 1000 pageviews a day. I think you have done a lot of marketing with your site. Isn’t that right ? By the way, what do you do with FB ? Is it just about posting status updates and groups ?

Argie Monroy May 10, 2011 at 3:02 pm

I use only a bit of social media promotion, and its only Facebook I am using. I can’t still keep up with generating traffic thru Twitter. And the other sources of my traffic came from those blogs which I commented and leave my link upon.

Jeevanjacobjohn May 11, 2011 at 2:13 pm

That’s a bit weird. Usually, Twitter is the most popular social media site (based on Twitter source). I think, you must really work on some Twitter strategies. Twitter will really give you some good traffic.

James Pruitt May 10, 2011 at 1:15 pm

I agree with keeping it fresh and changing things up. you can do that and still target the same niche. for example, for months I have been going on and on about traffic, seo, social media, and all that generation biz. But, honestly, although there is lots more I could say, I am kinda getting bored with it, and I have been getting loads of questions about other things, so its time to move on.

Jeevanjacobjohn May 11, 2011 at 2:23 pm

Hey James,

Thank you for the comment !

Glad that you agree with me. Yeah, same with me. I have been tired of writing about all this, again and again. Nowadays, I am trying to come up with connections and examples that are related to blogging.

Anyway, thank you !

By the way, what are your main traffic sources ?

Jayne Kopp May 10, 2011 at 11:51 am

Hi Jeevan, WOW what wonderful intelligence from such a young man.

I agree with everything you have said. The part I LOVED was ‘attitude’… although there were so many points you made that were spot on!

When we have a good (great) attitude, it not only is ‘felt’ but it comes out in our blog posts because a good attitude gives us the moxie and enthusiasm to let our posts flow.

Change is also important because with a good attitude (combined) we are willing to change and adapt. We do need to tweak here and there and it’s necessary to accept it when we need to do so… and just do it!(not dig our heels in).

It’s very important to remain open and be willing to listen to our audience and give them what they want… not always what we think they want.

I wish you nothing but the best! This was a bang-up post!

Jayne

Jeevanjacobjohn May 10, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Hey Jayne,

Thank you for your compliment !

Glad that you love the attitude. It is really important to have a great attitude because it determines whether a blogger can succeed or not. I agree. Great attitude will really improve your blog post (dramatically, it will improve your quality).

This is what that comes to my mind (when I think of change) :-

It is important to learn new things. But, it is more important (and harder) to apply what you have learned to new situations.

Thank you ! I really appreciate your feedback ! Thank you for the compliments.

By the way, what techniques do you use to maintain your traffic ? (and build it) ?
