How to Milk CommentLuv for All It’s Worth

208 Flares 208 Flares ×
commentluv premium traffic generation

Too many choices?

Most bloggers blog because they want to make money online.

What are the ingredients of making money blogging?

Having something worthy to sell – whether it’s a product or a service, and a readership that is willing to buy.

How do you get readers who are willing to buy?

By providing consistent value, building relationships, and building TRUST.

How do you cultivate such trust?

By giving.

On the Fence about CommentLuv?

When I first started blogging, I was a nobody in the blogosphere; just another wannabe trying to “make it” online.

We all have to start somewhere, right?

I knew that creating loyal readership was what I needed to focus on. Once you have readership, they will be the ones to spread the word about your blog and bring in even more readers.

And one way I did it is by giving my readers every reason to comment on my blog.

I made my blog DoFollow, which it still is, and installed CommentLuv to give my readers even more incentive to engage.

The result?

Traffic Generation Cafe as you see it in just over a year.

If you are still on the fence on whether to use CommentLuv on your blog or not, consider this: do the potential negatives outweigh the benefits of creating steady readership?

If you ask me, the answer is a strong NO.

Benefits of Commenting on CommentLuv Blogs

There are two major benefits CommentLuv provides to blog commentators:

  1. Traffic generation
  2. Link building

Seems to be simple and straight forward: when commenting on a CommentLuv enabled blog, you build an additional link back to one of your latest blog posts (link building), plus entice other commentators to click on that link by using a brilliant and catchy title of sorts (traffic generation).

Two birds with one stone, right? Not so fast.

Traffic generation and link building are two entirely different goals, which require two entirely different approaches.

CommentLuv Traffic Generation

How do you generate traffic from CommentLuv enabled blogs?

  1. You read the post in its entirety.
  2. You leave an intelligent comment providing additional feedback, resources, or even a different opinion.
  3. You pick a preferably relevant post as your CommentLuv link, the one that…
  4. …has an incredibly CATCHY and CLICKABLE title.
  5. You wait for other readers to click on that title to satisfy their curiousity.

Traffic generation from CommentLuv links comes down to the blog titles.

How’s that different from link building?

CommentLuv Link Building

As many of you already know, link building is the cornerstone of any successful SEO campaign.

However, not all links are created equal.

Google uses links to determine the topic of the content the link is pointing to.

That’s why using your main keywords as your anchor text is so vitally important in link building.

Side note: you shouldn’t get 100% exact anchor text links back to your blog posts – that would be an obvious link building footprint and Google doesn’t like to see that. Keep the ratio to about 60% exact and 40% other keywords.

So how do you generate exact anchor text links with CommentLuv?

The way CommentLuv works is it taps into your RSS feed to come up with the list of your 10 latest blog posts.

Whatever the current titles are, that’s what you see in your CommentLuv link choices.

Another helpful thing to know about CommentLuv is that it’s not dynamic, meaning that once the link is posted with your comment, it won’t change even if you change the title.

Now imagine you are going on a commenting spree and would like to build links to a specific post with your chosen anchor text in mind.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Change the title of your blog post to your EXACT keyword. Save.
  2. Go ahead and start leaving comments on CommentLuv enabled blogs.
  3. Pick your new title as your CL link.
  4. Post the comment.

Once you are done commenting, you can always go back and change the title of the post back to the catchy one. It won’t affect the links you already placed on other blogs.

Easy and brilliant, wouldn’t you agree?

As you can imagine, these kinds of titles won’t generation much traffic, but they are an excellent way to build some quality backlinks.

Traffic Generation AND Link Building Mixology

I realize that many bloggers are not the kind of link building fanatics you need to be to give up potential traffic generation in favor of pure link building.

Is there a way to accomplish both?

You won’t get as good results doing it this way, but it’s better than nothing.

What you do is change your catchy blog post title to the one that contains your keywords in the very beginning, as in:

  • Your Keyword: Come And Check Out My Brilliant Blog Post”

Needless to say, your keyword has to make sense to be included in the title this way.

Google tends to give more weight to the words placed first in the title, so you still might get some link building benefit, while keeping your title enticing to click on.

How to Do It Even Better with CommentLuv Premium

The new CommentLuv Premium has a great feature that allows you to add your top 5 favorite posts/pages to your list of 10 latest posts.

how to add commentluv premium favorites

So now, when I comment on any CommentLuv enabled blog, whether the blogger has the premium version installed or not, I have a choice of 15 posts, 5 of which are pure anchor text posts and the rest are posts with unedited titles.

Your top favorites don’t change unless you change them in your settings, so you have complete control as to what posts you choose.

I use my 10 latest posts to generate traffic and my top 5 to build links.

Speaking of which, how would you like your copy of CommentLuv Premium to be on me?

But, my Comluv is not working for me. I Get 1 or 2 comments max. and 100 visits a day.

Ana Hoffman January 13, 2013 at 3:30 pm

CL can be used as a tool to increase traffic by commenting on other CL-enabled blogs and/or as a way to engage your existing traffic, Yash.

Either way, if I were you, I’d take a look at your content to see if that’s the problem.

Joe Putnam January 3, 2013 at 6:02 pm

Does CommentLuv work for websites that don’t have blogs or does the site need to have a blog before a link will be included back to the site? I’m not sure how it this works, and our website currently doesn’t have a blog (although it will soon). Looking forward to your response! :)

Ana Hoffman January 13, 2013 at 3:11 pm

It’s only for sites that work off Wordpress.org platform, Joe.

Jeremy Cissell December 19, 2012 at 7:20 am

I agree. I just started using the free plugin on our blog. I really like it so far. I will be upgrading in a month if we still like it this much.

Thanks for the post

Virginia Cottrell November 23, 2012 at 9:15 am

Hi Ana,

Probably like many others I found your site whilst searching for commentluv. I actually had a problem with the RSS feed with CL and I found you !! I have to say that your site and posts are really informative and show a great interest in helping small business’s grow. I have a strong understanding of online marketing, and this is probably one of the best blogging sites I have seen in the arena. I want to read more but don’t have the time right now, will follow…..good job!

Virginia

Ana Hoffman November 25, 2012 at 2:31 pm

Very kind of you, Virginia; thank you.

Frank L. DeFazio November 14, 2012 at 7:26 pm

You make a pretty convincing argument for CommentLuv. I +1 -ed your site too!

Jessica Obermayer October 19, 2012 at 10:46 am

Ana:

Well, we use CommentLuv to build more engagement and improve our SEO with links, right? But how about this one? I found YOUR blog – LOVE IT – through doing a search on sites using CommentLuv on Google. And I’ll be back! Great content – I can tell you spend some time on your posts.

Thank you!
Jessica

Ana Hoffman October 21, 2012 at 9:44 pm

Well, thank you for letting me know, Jessica; it’s great to see that CL is paying off in more than one way.

Luke September 29, 2012 at 11:01 pm

Great opportunity to get the commentluv premium! Ana, I’m just wondering if it’s finished or still available?

There is no information when the post was published… very good blog you have, I enjoy many articles, but certainly commentluv premium got my attention, I have to really consider getting it…

Ana Hoffman October 1, 2012 at 4:05 pm

CL is still very much available for sale, Luke. Just follow the link.

Luke October 6, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Thanks Ana,

I believe we are going to invest in it in the upcoming weeks. Thanks for sharing, I assume you get comission, so I will use the link on your website while purchasing.

In the course of blogging over the months, I have learnt a lot about SEO and one of the things I have learnt is that SEO is king.

Dee August 20, 2012 at 11:07 pm

I really think CommentLuv is great! I use it mainly for link buildig purposes, rather than for traffic generation purposes; the latter seems too hit and miss. I will say though, that I have had some “accidental” traffic generation through it as well!

Ana Hoffman August 22, 2012 at 8:29 am

Traffic is always the bonus, Dee.

venkata ramana August 18, 2012 at 6:06 am

You are very welcome, Venkata; I hope it’ll help you as much as it helped me.

phil August 10, 2012 at 4:19 am

Hi Ana,

can i ask one question then, i have gone with the normal free comment luv version for now and installed a separate do follow plug in for my blog.

in settings it sates about which comments hould be do follow and i have got it set to registered members only, does this mean if they sign up to my blog feed on feedburner they will be a member?

thanks phil

Ana Hoffman August 10, 2012 at 9:45 am

I wouldn’t recommend making your readers register to get use of CL – it sort of defeats the purpose in many ways.

When you go under “Settings” then “general” in your WP dashboard, you’ll see a box that says “Anyone can register”. One someone registers on your site, you can see them under “Users”.

It’s really a bit pointless unless you have plans to turn them into a list of sorts, but it doesn’t really work that well.

phil August 9, 2012 at 2:39 am

Hi Ana,

Great post I am new to world of blogging and i am trying to create a blog with baby advice for new parents.

I have a few questions, if you use another article and reword it and add new parts yourself is this classed as ok in the blogging world or an i going to get a bad reputation for that. i dont consider myself a writer as such?

Although Minikids itself selling baby products I want the blog to be a useful resource to new mums is there a way i can find blogs related to my subject and also get other blogger to engage in guest posts on my blog?

How can I tell if my blog is do follow and is there any other advice you can give me about it please?

I am very interested in the comment luv premium i watched the video from comment luv and it mentioned over 10000 blogs are using this is there a way i can connect with some of those blogs is there a list or someing within the plugin?

sorry am clueless

thanks phil

Ana Hoffman August 9, 2012 at 7:14 am

You’ve got a lot of questions, Phil, and the best way to get answers is by doing a search for these topics in my search box.

Ruth Williams July 25, 2012 at 2:33 am

I have a problem I hope you’ll guide me in solving it. At first when I used to comment on blogs and sites having CommentLuv they were either accepted readily or were shown on the page but there used to be written below the title that they were in Moderation. But nowadays none of my comments are accepted nor shown in moderation. I don’t know what has gone wrong. I never used any software, all my comments were genuine and added value to the page they were posted on. Will you please tell me how I can make this right.

Ana Hoffman July 26, 2012 at 9:22 pm

This might be your problem, Ruth: http://www.trafficgenerationcafe.com/die-akismet-die/

David Hilditch June 20, 2012 at 8:58 am

Hi Ana,

I was wondering what you think about using Facebook for comments in blogs? I can see positives and negatives:

Positive – people don’t have to log in and spam is theoretically reduced, or at least people are more accountable.

Negatives – people may be hesitant to comment using their real identify, depending on the subject.

I’ve used FB comments on one site and wordpress comments on another but I’ve not been running long enough yet to notice the difference.

Ana Hoffman June 20, 2012 at 8:11 pm

Good question, David.

I used to have FB comments on my blog; back when the idea was just sprouting.

In the end, I decided that it’s a great solution for a blogger (don’t host the comments, have FB cut down on spam, etc), but not for the reader (not getting backlinks, hard to follow a conversation, etc).

Since I’ve always been more reader-benefit oriented, I opted out of using FB comments.

I am sure there have been quite a few changes since I tried them out, so I don’t really know how good it really is now.

Tommy Griffith July 4, 2012 at 6:32 pm

Hey Ana,

Great post. I liked this response about Facebook comments. With some of my other sites, I found that the quality of comments increased significantly when people had to associate their FB accounts with the comment. That being said, I felt that the quantity dropped significantly. It all depends on the strength of your readership and the subject of your blog IMO.

On another note, with new sites, I find myself often disabling comments, in order to prevent the “ghost town” feeling my blog might give. I also removed the dates from the posts, in order to give it that evergreen longevity.

Ana Hoffman July 10, 2012 at 1:24 pm

Personally, I found just as many junk self-serving comments with FB comment system, Tommy, but they were harder to manage.

Paul April 23, 2012 at 1:09 pm

Hi Anna
Just went back through this post for the third time, and each time pickup on something new. Slow learner I guess. While doing blog commenting I noticed that my pages did not show up as a choice for me to use. Thanks to your post I now understand how I can set up CommentLuv to show my pages which is truly awesome. Thanks for all your great posts that truly do help all of us in not only doing SEO right, but watching your style how to post for our readers.

Ana Hoffman April 25, 2012 at 12:18 pm

Slow and steady wins the race, Paul; and you are very welcome!

Ivin April 5, 2012 at 4:51 am

Hello Ana. I am using this post in one of my courses and actually showing people how to build links with CL Premium. Thanks for always being a great resource and I hope to share this with you soon!

Ana Hoffman April 5, 2012 at 8:08 am

I see you did find a good post on link building through comments!

I suppose I am writing too much; start forgetting my own archives. lol

Sheila March 27, 2012 at 12:07 am

How do you deal with so many comments? I have a hard time managing even 10 comments, I can’t imagine moderating so many!

Ana Hoffman March 28, 2012 at 9:59 am

Just a part of running a blog, Sheila – you deal with it like you deal with any other “tasks” you need to accomplish.

rob noble March 25, 2012 at 5:20 am

My interest is link building, plain and simple. CommentLuv allows keywords to be used in the name field so what could be better for SEO?
Making the links do follow would be a good start.
So many blogs that advocate using CommentLuv make their comments no follow links. That’s like saying to someone who is on a diet, “Yes, you’ve lost weight, but you’re still fat”.
Anyway, my compliments to Ana Hoffman for being a blogger of perspicacity and allowing a do follow link. My regards

Ana Hoffman March 26, 2012 at 8:17 pm

Thanks for the thumbs up, Rob.

Actually, it’s KeywordLuv that allows you to add keywords in your name field. Of course, CommentLuv Premium has that function built in as well.

Gareth Morgan February 26, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Is there ANYTHING bad about CommentLuv Premium?! I usually like to read pros and cons about a product/plugin because I refuse to believe something is perfect. This may be as close as what you can get. : )

Ana Hoffman February 27, 2012 at 7:19 am

No such thing as a perfect product, Gareth. lol

Some of the downsides are the fact that you have to stay on top of the CL links on your blog and make sure they are relevant to your audience.

They do add many links out to your blog. I haven’t found it to be a problem for Google, but needs to be mentioned.

Also, read this post: http://www.trafficgenerationcafe.com/broken-link-checker/

Rahul Tilloo February 24, 2012 at 8:31 pm

Thanks Ana for this amazing technique. I will certainly use this one boost my backlinks. I hope in future you will share more such techniques to help us out.

Ana Hoffman February 26, 2012 at 7:21 am

You are very welcome, Rahul.

And I will as I come up with them. lol

Matt MacLeod February 17, 2012 at 10:40 am

Thanks for the Keyword -change title tip. I should have thought about that already. Sometimes the most obvious things are also the most counter intuitive things.

Ana Hoffman February 17, 2012 at 7:29 pm

If all my readers figured everything out on their own, I’d be out of business. lol

Kellie February 12, 2012 at 3:44 pm

When it comes to milk I’m more of a ‘raw’ milk fan. :) . I’m loving comment luv, didn’t feel completely comfortable surfing around and making comments but for what ever reason feel more comfortable with luv.

Ana Hoffman February 12, 2012 at 9:59 pm

I like mine as processed as possible. lol

Michael February 3, 2012 at 11:31 pm

I’m adding CommentLuv to my offsite SEO routine and REALLY seeing the benefits from it. Especially getting the +1 from each post. Clearly link building is important, but I’m starting to see the social aspect really affecting SERP placement for monetized blogs

Ana Hoffman February 4, 2012 at 1:10 pm

Yes, Michael – I’ve noticed the surge in +1′s (thanks for giving me one!) since I installed CommentLuv Premium.

Sorry, Comments are Closed. Stop by My Facebook Page With Your Comment.
