How KeywordLuv Can Get You on the First Page of Google

kewordluv plugin imageStill not using KeywordLuv plugin on your blog?

You should. For more than one reason.

But later on that; let me start with telling you a bit about the plugin – judging by the fact that many of my commentators have no idea how to use it, plus I got one too many questions about it.

Since I am too lazy to write what others have written before me so well, I’ll take some excerpts from KeywordLuv download page:

Description

Reward your commentators by separating their name from their keywords in the link to their website, giving them improved anchor text.

In other words, you are letting your commentators to use both their name – to make the comments more personal and less spammy, and the keywords that will link to the URL they chose to use in the “website” section.

Example

If they enter “Steve@the best bank” in the Name field, their comment will have:

how to use keywordluv image

In the first example, they entered @ symbol between their keywords and their name and only their keywords became the anchor text.

In the second example, that’s what your anchor text would look like on a site without KeywordLuv.

For a live example, see the comment section below (and leave me a comment to test it out!).

KeywordLuv & Search Engine Ranking

So here comes the cool part. :)

It was brought to my attention by the fabulous Lisa Drubec of TheFriendlyBlogger.com.

Check out what she saw when she checked out her search engine ranking for the term “Blog Building Basics“:

keywordluv search engine ranking

Yes, that’s her blog in spot #3 for the term and yes, it’s MY BLOG for the same term in spot #4.

All thanks to KeywordLuv and Lisa using that term as the keyword in the comment section.

Marketing Takeaway

There’s a whole lot more to KeywordLuv then simply giving your readers an opportunity to advance their blogs (what’s the fun in that, huh?) through providing great comments on your blog and building quality links for themselves at the same time.

As you saw in the example above, it can also place your blog on the Google map.

I’m only learning about commentluv just now, and found you on my search with google. is keywordluv the same as commentluv?

Ana Hoffman December 14, 2012 at 11:02 pm

No, and judging by how you left your comment, you used both of them just fine, Nathan.

Anthony November 29, 2012 at 4:51 am

Hey Ana, great advice. Would you recommend using unique names and keywords as much as possible rather than the same name and keyword over and over?

Thanks Ant

Ana Hoffman December 4, 2012 at 11:05 am

Definitely vary it as much as you can, including some unrelated keywords like “click here”.

Marc November 29, 2012 at 12:44 am

Thanks, Ana, for the introduction to KeywordLuv. I have been introduced to the system only recently and stumpled over your blog when searching for a good tutorial.
Nice blog, btw. :)

Ana Hoffman December 4, 2012 at 11:01 am

Thanks, Marc.

Ritchie November 16, 2012 at 2:56 pm

Hi Ana, only just seen this Keywordluv thing (new to the party!!!) and a bit confused! I have my Wedding Band Blog which is to support my main band website, neither of which are Wordpress. Does this mean that apart from any actual clicks I will get dofollow links, or is it limited to WP blogs only??? Their site seemed vague, and a google search brought this blog up!

All help GREATLY appreciated by a noob!

Ana Hoffman November 17, 2012 at 2:51 pm

Not sure I understand your question, Ritchie.

And by the way, dropping your links in comments the way you did is the most sure way to be marked as a spammer.

Ritchie November 18, 2012 at 9:18 am

Sorry, didn’t mean to be.

What I was trying to get at was when i have searched about Keywordluv, the view is that its a great way to build links, but on the Keywordluv site it says that it is for WP blogs and sites. As it is, my blog is on Blogger and my main site is hosted by Vidahost, so my main point was does Keywordluv work as a method of SEO if my sites AREN’T on Wordpress?

Thanks (and sorry again!!)
Ritchie

Ana Hoffman November 19, 2012 at 7:37 am

I got you, Ritchie.

That’s true; you can’t use KL on YOUR sites to give others the benefit of building links, but you can still take advantage of KeywordLuv enabled sites to build links back to YOUR sites when leaving comments like you just did here.

Ritchie November 19, 2012 at 8:20 am

Thanks for that Ana, it actually makes sense now. I understand about the nofollow that, and for example how clicking a link here goes through a redirect in some way (didn’t say I understand FULLY!!), but I just couldn’t see how if it was a dofollow, that it would only work with Wordpress.

Thanks for clearing it up for me

Ritchie

Selda November 9, 2012 at 11:12 am

Great tips. If I have a real estate site with WP, and use commentluv under each building or listing, and let users to add comments, will I get better ranking just because of having comments on my page.. any idea ? Thanks

Ana Hoffman November 11, 2012 at 9:52 am

No, you won’t necessarily get better rankings because of comments, Selda, but Google can potentially see the engagement as a sign that the site is likely by users.

Either way, it can only benefit.

Bruno Buergi October 30, 2012 at 4:55 am

Thank you for the tips Ana. I just wondered how to use the keyword Luv the correct way and I came to your site. It’s well described how to use it the right way.

Ana Hoffman October 30, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Don’t get carried away with too much precise anchor text though, Bruno.

Przemek Czaicki October 14, 2012 at 4:50 am

Ana, what’s the value of KeywordLuv after the Panda and Penguin updates?

Ana Hoffman October 14, 2012 at 8:50 pm

Great question.

Personally, I stopped using it for now.

I only comment as Ana Hoffman and/or Traffic Generation Cafe to build brand links.

Don’t have any concrete results either way, but that’s the way I choose to go until it’s more clear what Google wants/likes to see.

Reggie October 11, 2012 at 10:12 pm

Hi Anna,

As of now I’m still searching and reading of what will be the best comment system for my blog. I came up with 3 choices which are Disqus, Commentluv, and Keywordluv. As I read about those 3 I came up to your blog and was convinced to maybe use Keywordluv for my blog. I will have it and see if this will help me. I have 1 question though. Is the plugin free or paid? You know I’m still a novice and don’t have enough budget for paying like Commentluv.

Cheers!

Ana Hoffman October 12, 2012 at 8:51 am

Commentluv and Keywordluv are not commenting systems, Reggie; they are just plugins to give the native WP comment system more functionality.

And yes, both of them have free versions.

Mohd Aktar September 22, 2012 at 11:41 am

@Ana,

Thank you for the wonderful post. I really loved it. I must say that I have never tested Keyword Luv on my blog, so I decided now to install and see if there are any differences in the level of interaction.

Thanks for the information. :)

Naser April 27, 2012 at 8:22 am

Hello Ana,
I have a question about keywordluv:

Is it good to frequently change keywords in name field on other blogs? I mean, right now I am using ‘Tech Blog’ as my keyword. I have many other keywords. Do you think I should fix on one keyword or go on changing as I have many keywords to choose from…..

Thanks in advance.

Ana Hoffman April 30, 2012 at 6:04 am

I think right now, with all latest SEO changes from Google, you should definitely vary your keywords more than ever, Naser.

Naser April 30, 2012 at 7:50 am

Thanks for help Ana. Just made the change :D

Pete February 8, 2012 at 5:21 pm

You came up very high on my Google search for Keyword Luv.
I’m still a little confused about KL versus CommentLuv -are they needed together? Totally separate?
Also, do you recommend a DoFollow plugin be used too?
Thanks,
Pete

Ana Hoffman February 9, 2012 at 8:36 am

CL and KL are separate plugins; you can use them independently, Pete.

As far as Dofollow is concerned, it’s up to you.

I use it.

Mir Imran Elahi November 1, 2011 at 4:54 am

I don’t use keyword in the name field of the comment section. I think that I should use it to get rank on search engine with my desire keywords. Thanks Ana for you great tips and found a great blog of yours.I hope that I’ll be your regular blog reader to get valuable tips from your blog.

Al Spaulding September 27, 2011 at 6:29 pm

I just added keywordluv to my blog and look forward to the benefits it will bring my humble online home in the future. Great post Ana

Noel Addison September 27, 2011 at 9:44 am

Ignoring keywordluv is like ignoring the opportunity to build a good relationship with other people on the web and the chance to success.

david September 18, 2011 at 10:39 am

Thanks for the info Ana :-) i have only just learnt the true power of commenting on quality blog posts such as yours. People power will always win out in the end… Thanks for the free seo report too…will take a look.

I came across your blog when doing a search for do-follow blogs to comment on. I read several of your posts already, and the one regarding keywordluv, in detail. I’ve read a lot of pro and con regarding this commenting method and am still a bit confused. I know that it is a great benefit for the one making the comment because if you approve my comment, I get a link back to my site. I know that as a website owner, you will most likely have more individuals commenting, but aren’t you passing along a lot of “link juice” to others? I see that this page, and your home page, even with all of the comments, have a nice Google PR. Are you saying that Google still loves you even though you pass a lot of link juice, or because you do? Also, does the Thesis theme allow dofollow links? I have my site on Thesis and haven’t really read any details much. Sorry for a long post & rambling, but I would really appreciate your assistance here. Thanks a lot.

Just discovered your site and I already have a gem tip in how and why to use KeywordLuv. I love how you gave the blogger incentive to include it in her blog.

Hi Ana,

I use CommentLuv and KeywordLuv on three of my blogs. I installed these plugin a few months ago, just to see what happens. In fact a lot of people come to my blogs to make a nice comment and profit from the backlinks.

I don’t understand that the number of spam comments does not decrease over time. Why try to spam a blog with nonsense comments when you can have a good backlink with a little more effort?

Carey_PA August 17, 2011 at 9:52 am

Ana,

Thanks so much for this post. I lvoed it. I have to tell you I just found your site today from your guest post you just did and I’ve been on your site ever since reading all I can.

Awesome job. Thanks again for providing so much awesome content!

Ana August 17, 2011 at 12:54 pm

That’s good to hear, Carey. You’re most welcome.

Ana August 11, 2011 at 5:44 pm

I entirely agree with you on all points, Steven.

I do use SEOSpyglass for my own business as well and up to this day they never disclosed how exactly they calculate their link value, so I am not sure how much stock I put into that.

david August 11, 2011 at 3:52 pm

Nice post — your website came up as one of the first entries when I searched for why some people are supposed to put the at (@) symbol after their name. I do have a question, though. I have a blog, and I thought it would be good to do the same thing as you, but do you end up with an unmanageable amount of comments you have to delete?

Ana August 11, 2011 at 5:49 pm

Glad you found me, David, and the answer is no.

KeywordLuv does encourage comments, but it doesn’t mean that you’ll have that many more commentators swarming your blog – it’s always proportionate to the traffic you get.

Chris August 11, 2011 at 2:09 am

I’ve been around for long enough to see things come and go and for the moment at least KeywordLuv seems to work well. I expect in time Mr G will detect KeywordLuv and apply a formula to downgrade the value of links where the keywords have little to do with the topic of the page.

The sooner Google does this the safer blogs will be from becoming glorified link farms.

I was tempted to be Chris@Branded USB but seing the topic of this page, today I am Chris.

My Branded USB Promo website has very few links and needs a bit of juice but that website scores very well with on-site factors which one of the recent Panda updates loved. So a web design that gives Google good user-behaviour statistics is a sound bedrock. Then those links will have a greater impact.

The fact that I am leaving a comment means hurray for KeywordLuv so thanks for your excellent blog.

Ana August 11, 2011 at 5:42 pm

KeywordLuv has been around for years, Chris.

If and when blog commenting links will be completely discounted, it’ll go for all the links, not just KeywordLuv.

Thanks for coming by.

Sophia August 6, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I never knew this before, KeywordLuv also takes a big role in SEO. Sometimes, when commenting, I prefer to find sites that are commenluv enabled but this post totally realize me that KeywordLuv is also important. Thanks for the info. :)

Ana August 7, 2011 at 3:50 am

Yes, it is. You’re welcome, Sophia.

Uiredesign August 3, 2011 at 2:36 am

I consider KeywordLuv is a better deal as it benefits both the users and the visitors. The total quality visits on the site is increased while The commentators are able to lik their keywords.Beside this all,as you mentioned its even search engine friendly.

Ana August 3, 2011 at 6:24 am

Yes, those are the very reasons why I love it. :-)
