Traffic Generation Blogging Contest – How I Got Over 400 Comments on My Entry

132 Flares 132 Flares ×
traffic generation blogging contest

It's contest time!

I recently entered the big Traffic Generation blogging contest, which is currently running until 15 April 2011.

As this is my very first contest, I really wanted to make it a success.

A number of bloggers around the world have now submitted their best articles, with one goal in mind – to win the contest. You gotta be in it to win it, right?

Now, there are several factors that the judges will be considering when scoring the contest entries:

  • The quality of content
  • The number of tweets and shares
  • Social exposure and popularity
  • The number of comments received and the responses made

As of today, my contest post has over 400 comments and counting. And that’s what I’ll be talking about in this post.

contest entry comments image

So, how did I do it? This is a question that I have been getting from a lot of people including Ana ;) . And I will spill the beans right here.

Simply put, I promoted my contest entry like my life was dependent on it!

Blog Post Promotion

A few days before my contest post went live, I made a very wise decision and purchased Kristi Hines’ new and inexpensive ebook, called Blog Post Promotion – The Ultimate Guide.

The timing was absolutely perfect for me. I was very fortunate that Kristi finished her book just in time before I started promoting my entry.

I read it right away, in one sitting, and I just couldn’t wait to implement the blog post promotion strategies discussed in there.

And as I started putting what I have learned into action, I also had other ideas popping into my head, which I have never thought of or used before.

How it Works

This is definitely the ultimate guide when it comes to promoting your blog posts. If you have your own pillar post, guest post or contest post that you want to promote heavily, this is a must-read ebook.

Why does it work?

Kristi won 3 out 4 contests that she had entered previously, so she definitely knows what she is talking about. And I listened to her as I wanted similar results as hers. :)

So, I have implemented most of the strategies that I learned in the book and they are responsible for bringing my fantastic results – a lot of comments and shares.

I’m not using some of the methods as I needed more time to set them up beforehand; however, I’ll use them in the future as I now know the ins and outs of promoting a blog post massively for incredible results.

The Power of Networking

One of the key factors to creating a buzz on your blog and getting your name and blog out there is networking – it’s very powerful.

I got fed up of having a lonely blog, a while back.

I then started networking with other bloggers through blog commenting, guest posting, social media interaction etc. I soon got noticed as my face was seen everywhere across the web.

I have built great relationships and made good friendships along the way.

Getting Helping Hands

The fact is you can’t promote your blog posts heavily on your own – you need some help. And that’s one of the things that Kristi teaches in her book.

Since I belong to a number of networking groups and communities online, it was easier for me to ask other members/friends for their help with promoting my contest entry.

traffic generation youtube comments

Most of them were happy to help – left me comments and shared my post. Some of them wanted a favor in return, and I happily obliged (within reason of course). Some have not responded at all and that’s okay.

Think about it… If you have friends with the same interests and goals, they would be happy to help you, if you ask them.

That’s exactly what I did. It was more like putting the phrase: “Ask and you shall receive”, into action and it worked.

Marketing Takeaway

Want to make your blog posts popular? Want to get crazy amount of comments, retweets and shares?

I highly recommend that you get yourself a copy of Blog Post Promotion – The Ultimate Guide.

You now have the opportunity to learn about the specific blog post promotion strategies from someone who has achieved amazing results, using the same proven to work methods.

Please come and check out my blogging contest entry, comment on it and share it on social media as *crazy* as you can! ;)

How About You?

  • Have you read this ebook already?
  • If you have, how is it working for you?
  • How do you get crazy comments and shares on your blog posts?

I definitely have to check out the Blog Post Promotion guide from Kristi. I’m just getting started to add new posts to my blog on a regular basis and to promote the blog and I guess I can learn quite a lot from this guide. Also, the price of the 2nd edition is currently only $25.

Ana Hoffman February 6, 2012 at 7:30 am

It’s one of those reads I keep going back to, Robert; I am sure you’ll learn a great deal from it as well.

Dan September 11, 2011 at 5:32 am

Hey Mavis,

Wow 400 comments. I came over here through your link on your site. For 37 bucks I am not sure how anyone couldn’t buy Kristi’s book. My guess is that Ana likely has a copy of it as well and since all 3 of you tend to get 50 to 100 or more comments per post, it is a pretty safe bet that the techniques in the book actually work :-)

Ana Hoffman September 11, 2011 at 4:10 pm

I do have Kristi’s book, Dan, and refer to it all the time!

Mavis Nong | Online Business Success September 12, 2011 at 3:55 am

Great to see you here, Dan. Agreed – the techniques do work :)

Thanks for stopping by and for leaving a comment.

All the best,
Mavis

I love the idea of running contests and giveaways for promotion. Once you structure it the first time, you can easily gain momentum and use it more quickly and more easily in the future merely by rotating the prize. You can grow quite a following by doing this on a regular basis.

Ana Hoffman September 7, 2011 at 7:05 am

I agree and it’s so much fun! I should’ve done it long ago!

Stephen Guise @ Critical Thinking June 25, 2011 at 2:28 pm

This read like a giant advertisement for Kristi’s book. A lot of “you must buy this book” and very little quality – quite unlike most posts at the traffic generation cafe. I’m sure it’s a great book, but I’d recommend being more subtle about trying to get your affiliate commission in the future.

I know Ana didn’t write this, but it has still hurt her brand in my eyes. I figured it would be helpful to have a neutral third party give you feedback on this.

Mavis Nong June 27, 2011 at 4:35 am

Interesting feedback, Stephen.

1. Yes, Ana didn’t write this post, but she approved and liked it.
2. I don’t make a dime from the links in this post. Ana does, they are her links as she endorses Kristi’s product too.
3. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with recommending a product that has helped you to see the desired results. Smart marketers do this many times.
4. In this post, I’m answering a question that I have been getting from a lot of people including Ana. And yes, Kristi’s ebook is the answer.
5. Ana and her readers have not shared your feedback: “A lot of “you must buy this book” and very little quality”. I don’t see that either.
6. I’m all about sharing my results and recommending what works for me. I do not push any products forward to make commissions.

You may want to check Ana’s review on Kristi’s ebook: http://www.trafficgenerationcafe.com/blog-post-promotion/

Ana June 27, 2011 at 7:38 am

I thought I’d throw my two cents in, Stephen – as Mavis already pointed out, she was getting a lot of questions on how exactly she managed to get such an exposure for her blog post, including from me (I actually asked her specifically to write a post on that), and Kristi’s book was how she did it.

If you don’t like the answer, that’s your prerogative; however, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this post or the endorsement within it.

Stephen Guise June 27, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Hi Ana,

Essentially, I agree with you.

As I said to Mavis, the only thing I’d leave is that it did come off “salesy” to me – not a crime or even a problem – but maybe helpful to know. Since I’m the only one who thinks that (or cares enough to say anything), it should obviously be taken with a grain of salt.

It wasn’t a very fruitful comment in retrospect. A personal email or tweet may have been more appropriate for this. Thanks for giving your $.02!

Stephen Guise @ Critical Thinking June 27, 2011 at 2:43 pm

Thanks for your respectful and thoughtful reply to what I understand what a harsh comment. Honestly, this post just caught me off guard. What you essentially gave was a book review – not what I expected from the title (but fair considering the book was the answer). I think for that reason it came off “salesy” to me.

I saw that the links were Ana’s, but I assumed incorrectly that you got a cut based on your heavy promotion of the product in the article. Now I understand that you just love the product, which is great!

If I could rewrite the comment, I would just say it came off “salesy” to me. It wasn’t poor quality – I was wrong to say that and I apologize. It was one of those comments you think “hmm…am I sure about that?” right after sending. :-)

Again Mavis, thanks for your response. I hope you can see where I was coming from.

jamesthejust June 27, 2011 at 1:41 pm

Ouch. First I have to say: well-done for Mavis, and I totally agree with her points on Kristi’s book. I bought it myself from another blogger’s affiliate link during the CommentLuv contest, and I don’t regret the purchase.

Secondly: running a blog and being as busy as I am, I’d welcome anyone to write a review of something in answer to a reader’s question. Nothing wrong with guest posting, and Ana’s a business person extraordinaire: she’s smart with leveraging time.

That’s all she did here.

Thirdly: the three people involved (Kristi, Mavis and Ana) are entirely trustworthy in my book, and I’m a picky grump when it comes to spotting out sketchy opportunism. I just wrote a rant against it (not my first) at my own blog.

All that to say: what Mavis shared here wasn’t fluff. Mavis writes it straight from the hip (or you don’t read her often?). Ana publishes stuff she edits and her blog’s legit. Kristi Hines knows her stuff with social media, period – and her book’s revolutionary to someone like me who usually just builds links with a billion submitters.

I dunno, I just thought I’d give this thread an objective opinion from an unrelated third party myself, for what it’s worth.

Disclosure: I made zero money from this comment. (But by all means, feel free to donate at my blog.)

Stephen Guise June 27, 2011 at 3:01 pm

Hey James,

I agree with you more than what I wrote. While I don’t know Mavis well, her response to this was more than enough to show her character and maturity. I really like Ana and Kristi – they are classy bloggers!

As I said to Ana and Mavis, I agree with everyone that my comment was off the mark. I simply went overboard as I happened to be very sensitive to sales at the moment (my last blog post was related). I appreciate that you took the time to give your opinion as a neutral third party.

Disclosure: Ana said she’d split the affiliate commission from sales of this book with me if I made amends with everyone. (false) :-P

Jeff Faldalen@The MLM Mentor August 4, 2011 at 5:58 pm

Hi Stephen,
I am familiar with both Mavis and Ana, both of who I highly respect. As a marketer I appreciate any tool they suggest. I personally feel it is my responsibility as a marketer to share and promote tools that I use.

I mean really, isn’t marketing about promoting items we believe in?

Thank you for the post,
Jeff Faldalen

PS I will be purchasing the book ;)

Mavis Nong August 5, 2011 at 8:02 am

Thanks very much for your kind words and input. Jeff.

I’m confident you’ll find the book very informative and helpful.

So that is the story of your success.

It only proves that interaction is the key to building a successful blog. The more you interact in the blogosphere, the more you will get famous since your url will show in other sites.

Implementing what you learned from the ebook is a wise decision. 

Stella April 13, 2011 at 5:05 am

Hey Mavis, congrats about your awesome progress and achievement so far, on the contest. I believe most of your results are due to your having taken action on what you read from Kristi’s new book – that’s what makes a whole lot of difference. I bet you than some other people may have also got the book but just added it to their ‘I have this book too” bragging right.

I’m impressed with your results – 400+ comments is an enviable one.

Good luck in the finals.

Mavis Nong April 13, 2011 at 9:55 am

Thanks a bunch, Stella. I couldn’t agree with you more – the key is to implement what you’re learning.

Taking action pays off :) . I appreciate your visit and best wishes.

Sam April 13, 2011 at 3:09 am

Hi Mavis,

If you have a strong helping online network then you can easily influence many visitors and readers, I think that’s what you did quite brilliantly.

Of course if you have some important advice from a experienced person then it also make your task quite easy.

Mavis Nong April 13, 2011 at 3:28 am

That’s very true, Sam. I agree, the ebook made the process a lot easier :)

Thanks for stopping by and for your comment.

How awesome Mavis. Great to hear that the Ebook is worthwhile too.

A great resource on it’s own means nothing if you don’t implement what you have learned however.

It’s obvious that this is exactly what you’ve done.

Congratualtions and all the best for the competition.

Aloha Mavis, I can’t say a job well done, because it is beyond a job it shows as a passion. And you got to love it and enjoy it to make it happen. I am all for the passion and when you see a person just going full throttle, it energizes the next person to amp up their stuff. Keep it going, girl. Glad to see an awesome mentor as yourself! Mahalo, Lani :)

You are absolutely right about making it a priority, last year I joined a contest where I promoted and pushed and was able to win a free Nintendo Wii + Wii Fit Balance board and I won a Dell Inspiron Laptop all from the same contest. I have a much smaller reach than other bloggers, but because I was one of the first to hit the contest I hit the milestones fast. Then when other bloggers with larger social networks got involved they skyrocketed to the top and won the bigger prizes like the iPad and Macbook Pro, but I was just happy I won what I had.

Mavis Nong April 13, 2011 at 2:04 am

Congratulations on winning the contest too, Justin! It’s all about promoting your entry like crazy.

I appreciate you helping and supporting me to win :)

Thanks for stopping by and for your input.

Michele Welch April 12, 2011 at 8:07 am

Hi Mavis,

Well done! I actually purchased Kristi’s ebook as well. I agree, great stuff! I only wish I had implemented those tactics with the blogging contest. :-(

Lesson learned: reading and research won’t make one bit of difference if you don’t implement and take action!!

It’s all about setting priorities as as you said, “You gotta be in it to win it, right?”

These opportunities is all about networking and you are a prime example of the benefits of reaching out and making requests of people… awesome!

Mavis Nong April 13, 2011 at 2:07 am

Thanks a bunch, Michele. You’re right, the key is to implement what you have learned in order to see the desired results.

I’m sure you’ll implement Kristi’s teachings in the next contest ;)

I appreciate your visit and input.

All the best,
Mavis

DiTesco April 12, 2011 at 7:49 am

Well done Mavis. I have to admit that you have out it a lot of effort to receive all the attention for that awesome entry of yours. So to show you that aside from having the determination to do something, action is more important than anything else. Since you did exactly what was needed to be done, the results are proof enough to show that it is possible. 400+ comments is massive and poor “guy” who had to host your entry, haha. Just kidding. You know me, can’t miss an opportunity, lol. Keep it up!

Mavis Nong April 13, 2011 at 2:10 am

Thanks very much for your kind words and for putting up with my endless comments, DiTesco :D .

Very true – no magic bullet, no secrets – it’s all about taking massive action to see massive results!

I appreciate your visit and comment.
